Well done Stephanie for the outstanding dedication that you show towards the community. Not only do you contribute by leading Arts and Drama classes for Oxtons' youngsters, amongst other duties, but you have shown the way forward by instigating a project with students from Napier University in designing a logo for our lovely village.
Every single portfolio on display, 23 of them if I recall, were meticulously prepared by the students and showed that they all took great pride in their presentations. There were no losers on display, every one a winner.

Thank you

Retired Oxton geography teacher William Loneskie's new e-novel Threat Level Critical is on the one hand an action novel about a quasi-military terrorist plot with its narrative set in real places, mostly in Northern Britain, and on the other a political statement of our time. Mr Loneskie covered thousands of miles in 2011 researching his 50,000 word book which begins at Soutra Aisle and ends at Loch Assynt. Here is an extract :
Chapter 25 Rendezvous
The pilot banked the new Viking Twin Otter over the Strait of Gibraltar looking for the Superyacht Ocean Oasis, which he soon spotted because she was hard to miss. Longer than The Transato, she was a dazzlingly impressive craft, as was her bill of sale. Unlike The Transato she was a perfectly ordinary yacht, without the accoutrements of war, and without a planing hull which restricted her maximum speed to around 20 knots despite the power of two 3,000 bhp Caterpillar diesels. ‘Ordinary’ however, could never describe the appearance and quality of such a vessel; ‘luxury’ could. The saloon, featuring sumptuous horseshoe seating in red wool and leather, was enclosed by huge glazing not only around it but also above it. The armoured glass ceiling allowed maximum daylight to penetrate in gloomy conditions, and could also be closed off in hot weather with insulated electric-sliding panels. The sundeck featured a hot tub large enough to be a small swimming pool around which were arranged designer tables and chairs and a bar which rose from below the deck at the touch of a button. The decking was of traditional teak with stainless steel highlights and the guard rails were of four inch diameter heavily chromed steel. At the top of the yacht was a modern version of a crow’s nest for the most dramatic of views, which was reached by a lift from the main deck. In the summer the women who sat on chairs on the top deck around the fat, balding man who employed them would have been in bikinis, but in the cool of the Mediterranean winter they wore trouser suits instead. Their eyeware was the same however -the most expensive sunglasses- which continued to hide their thoughts behind an aggressive stare similar to the in-your-face black niquab of the Muslim fundamentalist.
Threat Level Critical can be downloaded from the Kindle website.

THE LAW OF THE GARBAGE TRUCK

Sixteen years ago I learned an important life lesson, in the back of a New York City taxi cab.

I hopped in a taxi, and we took off for Grand Central Station. We were driving in the right lane when, all of a sudden, a black car jumped out of a parking space right in front of us.

My taxi driver slammed on his brakes, skidded, and missed the other car by mere inches! The driver of the other car, the guy who almost caused a big accident, whipped his head around and started yelling bad words at us. My taxi driver just smiled and waved at the guy. And I mean, he was actually friendly!

So, I asked him, "Why did you just do that? This guy almost ruined your car and could've sent us to the hospital!"

And this is when my taxi driver told me about what I now call, "The Law of Garbage Trucks."

"Many people are like Garbage Trucks. They run around full of garbage, full of frustration, full of anger, and full of disappointment. As their garbage piles up, they need a place to dump it, and if you let them, they'll dump it on you. When someone wants to dump on you, don't take it personally. Instead, just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on. You'll be happier because you did."

Wow. That really got me thinking about how often do I let Garbage Trucks run right over me? AND, how often do I then take their garbage and spread it onto other people: at work, at home, on the streets? It was that day I resolved, "I'm not going to do it anymore."

Since then, I have started to see Garbage Trucks everywhere. Just as the kid in the Sixth Sense movie said, "I see dead people," I can now say, "I see Garbage Trucks." :)

I see the load they're carrying ... I see them coming to drop it off. And like my Taxi Driver, I don't make it a personal thing; I just smile, wave, wish them well, and I move on.
